Visit to City Beet Farm – Wednesday Aug 14th, 2013

Thanks to everyone who came out to tour of City Beet Farm this month in collaboration with Young Agrarians! Despite the rain we got to take a close look at how Ruth and Katie are growing in back and front yards, carefully trellising tomatoes, and tending to rows of cabbage and collards. Luckily, we found a dry gathering place under a pine tree in Mount Pleasant park to have our grand potluck feast.

Visit to Zaklan Heritage Farm – Saturday, July 27th, 2013
Thanks to farmers Doug Zaklan and Gemma Mcneill for giving us a tour of Zaklan Heritage Farm, followed by a delicious potluck and stompin-feet tunes by bluegrass band Still Spirits! The farm is the oldest and newest farm in Surrey, as it’s been in the Zaklan family since 1928, but has been reinvented in the past few years by these two young farmers (who happened to meet at the UBC Farm). Visit to Hastings Urban Farm – Thursday, June 27th, 2013

Thanks to everyone who came out to tour Hastings Urban Farm in June in collaboration with Young Agrarians! The goal of the tours and potlucks is to bring folks involved and interested in urban farming together to meet each other and get an inside peek at urban farms in the city. Hastings Urban Farm is a farm site in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside that is supported by the Portland Hotel Society. They grow a mix of annual veggies, compost on site and are home to bees tended by Hives for Humanity. They’ve also got a soccer pitch and plans to grow the site into a community gathering space.
